I've kept coming to Papillon and Sigrid all these years because I really like the caring approach to the horses and the emphasis on working in harmony with the horse.

When I first started riding with Sigrid in the 1980's, I was drawn by her method of teaching, which focussed on establishing a good seat, combined with soft, giving hands. Over the years, I have come to understand that this method of riding is underscored by a strong philosophy, a philosophy which informs the relationship of the rider and the horse. It is a philosophy grounded in the principle of harmony between horse and rider - a harmony which draws upon the principles of classical equitation. It is a discipline which requires dedication and patience, but one in which the goals are truly rewarding - for the performance is drawn out gently, patiently, and not at the expense of the horse. Over the years we have known and trained many horses together and each one has been different, and each has been special.

I've been riding with Sigrid Schaerf, who runs Papillon, since 1987. I rode Papi, after whom Papillon is named, for a long time until he retired. I've also ridden Monty, Bear and now Banjo. They have all taught me different things - in some ways, the most important things have not been technical riding things, but about relationships and trust and relying on one another. I've kept coming to Papillon and Sigrid all these years because I really like the caring approach to the horses and the emphasis on working in harmony with the horse. I've also found the teaching tailored to my changing needs over the years.
